Justin Brownlee leads Gilas Pilipinas past Bahrain in the Asian Games 2023 opener

Justin Brownlee led Gilas Pilipinas to an 89-61 victory over Bahrain in the 19th Asian Games men’s basketball tournament opener on Tuesday in Hangzhou, China. Brownlee finished with a double-double of 20 points and 10 rebounds, while CJ Perez added 15 points for the Philippines.
Gilas Pilipinas starts Asian Games campaign with win over Bahrain

Justin Brownlee led Gilas Pilipinas to an 89-61 victory over Bahrain in the 19th Asian Games men’s basketball tournament opener on Tuesday in Hangzhou, China.

Brownlee finished with a double-double of 20 points and 10 rebounds, while CJ Perez added 15 points for the Philippines. Ange Kouame, Kevin Alas, and Marcio Lassiter also chipped 10 points each.
Gilas relied on a strong second-quarter performance to build a commanding lead. The Filipinos outscored Bahrain, 29-15, in the said frame to end the first half at 51-33.

The Philippines never looked back in the second half, extending its lead to as many as 30 points. The Bahrainis could not mount a comeback as Gilas cruised to its first win in the tournament.

The replacements for Calvin Abueva, Terrence Romeo, Mo Tautuaa, and Jason Perkins were also allowed to play in the game. CJ Perez, Kevin Alas, Marcio Lassiter, Chris Ross, and Arvin Tolentino all saw action and contributed to the team’s victory.

This is a good start for Gilas Pilipinas in its campaign to win its first Asian Games basketball medal since 1998. The team will next face Kazakhstan on Wednesday.
