In a surprising turn of events, Barangay Ginebra is actively searching for a new import player as their beloved star import, Justin Brownlee, faces a potential doping ban. The team’s governor, Alfrancis Chua, confirmed this pivotal development on Tuesday, asserting the need for preparedness under all circumstances.
“The way I work, it’s always advanced,” Chua remarked. “Just in case.”
The controversy arose when Justin Brownlee, the backbone of the Ginebra team since 2016, tested positive for Carboxy-THC, a prohibited substance according to the World Anti-Doping Agency. This revelation unfolded during the Asian Games in September, casting a cloud of uncertainty over the popular import player’s future in the league. As of now, he is confronting the possibility of a two-year suspension. However, the duration of his ban could be reduced to one month, contingent on the outcome of his case.
Brownlee’s contributions to the team have been remarkable, securing six titles and consistently reinforcing the Gin Kings in seven consecutive import-laden conferences. This sudden doping controversy has shocked fans and raised significant questions about the team’s immediate future.
Despite the unexpected twist, Chua remained tight-lipped about the potential replacement imports, indicating that the management is still evaluating their options. He mentioned, “Hindi namin alam eh. Lahat kami nakalutang. We are blinded. We are just going to wait. As of now, naghahanap kami ng replacement just in case.”
Chua emphasized the situation’s urgency, acknowledging that the team’s preparations for the upcoming PBA Commissioner’s Cup are underway. The competition is set to commence on November 5, with the Gin Kings slated for their first game on November 17 against Converge. The looming uncertainty over Brownlee’s fate is a cause for concern, and the team is taking proactive steps to ensure they are well-prepared for whatever the future holds.
“We are just going to wait. Kapag ibagsak sa amin ‘yung bomba, mawawalan kami ng import,” Chua added, signifying the gravity of the situation and the importance of finding a suitable replacement before the upcoming tournament kicks off.
