The JRU Heavy Bombers stunned the defending champion Letran Knights in overtime, 85-79, in the NCAA Season 99 men’s basketball tournament opener on Sunday. The Heavy Bombers trailed by as many as 10 points in the fourth quarter, but they rallied to tie the game at 71-71 on a clutch three-pointer by Shawn Argente with 1:45 remaining in regulation. Letran’s Deo Cuajao answered with a game-tying three-pointer of his own to send the game into overtime.

The JRU Heavy Bombers pulled off a stunning upset of the defending champion Letran Knights in overtime, 85-79, in the NCAA Season 99 men’s basketball tournament opener on Sunday, September 24, at the Mall of Asia Arena.

In the fourth quarter, the Heavy Bombers were behind by 10 points, but they fought back and tied the game at 71-71 thanks to Shawn Argente’s impressive three-pointer with only 1 minute and 45 seconds left in regulation. However, Letran’s Deo Cuajao responded with a game-tying three-pointer, which sent the game into overtime.

In overtime, JRU took control early, thanks to a pair of three-pointers by Marwin Dionisio and a basket by Agem Miranda. The Knights cut the deficit to one point, 77-76, on a pair of free throws by Kurt Reyson, but Miranda responded with four straight points to put the Heavy Bombers in control.

With the help of Miranda and JL Delos Santos’ clutch free throws, JRU managed to maintain their lead in the final minute. Although the Knights had an opportunity to tie the game in the last seconds, Kylie Tolentino’s three-pointer failed to hit the mark, ultimately resulting in the Heavy Bombers securing the win.

Miranda led JRU with 17 points, including seven in overtime. Dionisio also scored 17 points, while Argente added 12 points. Delos Santos finished with nine points, six rebounds, and 11 assists.

For Letran, Reyson had an all-around game with 18 points, six rebounds, and four assists. Tolentino chipped in with 14 points, while Paolo Javillonar added 12 and 10 rebounds.

JRU’s victory was a testament to their growth and depth as a team. The Heavy Bombers overcame a slow start and a late deficit to defeat the defending champions.
