Stephen Holt Top Pick in 2023 PBA Draft

The 2023 Philippine Basketball Association (PBA) rookie draft has concluded, with Stephen Holt being selected by the Terrafirma Dyip as the first overall pick.

Holt, a former NBA G League veteran and an alumnus of Saint Mary’s College of California, is a highly skilled and experienced player who is expected to make a big impact on the Dyip.

The draft was full of surprises, with several teams making unexpected choices in the first round. Blackwater selected Christian David with the second overall pick, while Rain Or Shine secured Luis Villegas and Keith Datu with their back-to-back first-round selections. NorthPort also made a surprise pick by selecting Zav Lucero as the fifth overall pick, while Phoenix opted for Ken Tuffin, known as the three-point king of the PBA Draft Combine, as the sixth overall pick.

NLEX joined the surprise party by choosing Richie Rodger as the seventh overall pick, and Meralco followed suit by selecting Brandon Bates as the eighth overall pick.

One of the most notable surprises was the fall of Schonny Winston, a player projected to be selected second overall in many mock drafts. He eventually landed with Converge as the ninth overall pick. Converge also raised eyebrows by choosing BJ Andrade, who was not initially projected as a first-rounder, as the 10th overall pick.

The Batang Pier continued to make unconventional choices by drafting Cade Flores as the 11th overall pick, closing the first round of selections with a bang. Terrafirma Dyip wrapped up their first-round picks by selecting TJ Miller.

The draft was full of surprises, and it will be interesting to see how these unexpected choices pan out in the upcoming season.
