The TNT Tropang Giga pulled off a stunning comeback against the NLEX Road Warriors on Wednesday night at the Philsports Arena, spoiling what was supposed to be a celebratory evening for PBA legend Asi Taulava and NLEX newcomer Robert Bolick.
From Down and Out to Victory
Trailing by as much as 22 points in the first half, the Tropang Giga roared back in the second half, fueled by a dominant performance from import Rondae Hollis-Jefferson (33 points, 16 rebounds) and sharp shooting from Calvin Oftana (29 points, 5 threes). Jewel Ponferrada also played a key role with a timely 8-0 run late in the third quarter that gave TNT the lead they wouldn’t relinquish.
Resilience and Teamwork
Head coach Jojo Lastimosa credited the team’s effort and determination for the win, especially with the absence of starting guard Jayson Castro due to a hip injury. “You can’t coach effort,” he said. “It’s something that should come from the players. The players had to decide na sa amin ‘to.”
Key Contributors
The Tropang Giga received contributions from various players throughout the game. Rookies Kim Aurin (11 points) and Kib Montalbo played solid minutes in the fourth quarter, helping TNT maintain their double-digit lead. Veteran Glenn Khobuntin also chipped in with a crucial three-pointer to open the final period.
NLEX Disappointment
The Road Warriors, on the other hand, suffered their fourth straight loss despite a career-high 25 points from Robbie Herndon. Stokley Chaffee Jr. added 15 points and 17 rebounds, but it wasn’t enough to overcome the Tropang Giga’s second-half surge.
Bolick’s Debut Dampened
The much-anticipated debut of Robert Bolick, acquired by NLEX earlier this week, could have been more impressive. The former B. League import finished with nine points on eight shots, a rebound, and four assists in 33 minutes.
Looking Ahead
TNT (3-3) will look to build on their momentum when they face the Blackwater Bossing on Friday, December 15. NLEX (2-6) will try to break their losing streak against the same Blackwater team on December 22.
